Hut with history

Well rested after a good sleep, we start out from the Zittauer Hütte (2,328 m). A path leads here up to the upper Gerlossee, which we leave on the left and follow the path at the crossroads towards the Rosskarscharte. At first the trail leads along a beautiful path, where you should be sure-footed and not afraid of heights, then the climb to the Rosskarscharte follows relatively quickly. A kind of stone staircase leads up to the crossing. As soon as you have crossed it, you have a wonderful view of the Reichenspitze with its glacier fields as well as the Gerlossee. Just before the col, a detour to the Rosskopf (2,845 m) is also possible.

NOTE: There may be snowfields in this area that have to be crossed. Now we have conquered the steep climb and we head downhill through the Rosskar to the Rosskarlacke and to the Keesböden at the end of the Rainbachtal, where we meet the Richterhütte hiking trail at a crossroads. The last climb up to the Richterhütte (2,367 m) starts below the goods cable car bottom station. Now we have earned a rest and top up our energy levels with a hearty snack.

The way back from the hut leads along the same path to the goods cable car bottom station and further downhill past the rustic Rainbachalm and through the wonderfully fragrant pine forest to the Krimmler Tauernhaus (1,631 m), our destination for today. There you can choose between different types of accommodation, from a simple dormitory to a comfortable twin bed room. The Krimmler Tauernhaus has a long tradition as a north-south connection across the Alps, and was already mentioned in documents in 1389.
